Theoretical High Energy Physics at Argonne

We work at the interface of theory and experiment — from high-precision Standard Model calculations and the structure of hadrons to the physics that may lie beyond, in colliders, in the dark sector, and in the early universe.

About the group

The Argonne theory group is part of the High Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory. Our research spans high-precision calculations of Standard Model processes, the interpretation of collider and astrophysical data, and model building beyond the Standard Model. Members of the group hold joint appointments at nearby universities and work closely with Argonne's experimental and computational programs.

Research directions

A few of the threads that run through the group's work.

Collider and Higgs physics

Precision phenomenology for the LHC and future colliders, effective field theory, and what the Higgs boson can tell us about physics beyond the Standard Model.

QCD and hadron structure

Perturbative QCD, factorization and resummation, parton distribution functions and generalized parton distributions, quarkonium production, and jet substructure.

Beyond the Standard Model

Supersymmetry and extended Higgs sectors, dark matter and dark sectors, baryogenesis and the matter–antimatter asymmetry, and neutrino physics.

Formal and computational methods

Scattering amplitudes, conformal field theory and the bootstrap, light-ray operators, and quantum simulation and machine learning applied to high energy physics.
